So hearing aids used to whistle, you used to constantly be turning them up and down the volume, because they used to amplify everything by the same amount, whereas now the digital hearing aids that we’ve got will automatically change depending on what volume they’re exposed to, so that they won’t amplify loud sounds the same way that they amplify quiet sounds. So, you will not have your head blown off by a loud siren going past, but they also automatically adjust depending on where you are. So, if you’re somewhere that’s really, really noisy then they’ll be trying to cut down that noise and amplify the speaker that you are wanting to listen to. So, there is a lot less interaction, which means that you are not drawing awareness to the hearing aids and you can just put them in in the morning and forget about them until you take them out at night-time.
Hearing specialist Olivia Austin talks about the benefits of modern hearing aid technology and the difference between digital hearing aids and older style analogue hearing aids.
