What to Expect at Your Hearing Test

Your appointment

Your appointment is with one of our HCPC-registered audiologists at our independent clinic. A hearing health check or full audiogram assessment takes around 30 minutes, and a hearing aid assessment around 90 minutes.

  • We ask a few questions about your ears and your hearing
  • Your audiologist looks into your ears with an otoscope to check their health, including for ear wax
  • A screening hearing test checks the key frequencies to see whether your hearing is within the normal range
  • Your audiologist explains your results and talks you through your options

Which test is right for you?

Hearing health check: if you have never had a hearing test, or you are not sure whether you have hearing loss.

Full audiogram assessment: if you have had hearing loss diagnosed before or you wear hearing aids. We can provide a report if you need one.

Hearing aid assessment: if you are thinking about hearing aids. We assess your hearing and, if you have a hearing loss, recommend the hearing aids best suited to your listening needs and lifestyle.

After your test

If ear wax is affecting your hearing, we can remove it at the same appointment or book a follow-up. If the test shows a hearing loss, your audiologist will explain your options, which may include a fuller assessment or a referral to your GP. You decide your next step.

Read more in our guide to 5 signs you need a hearing test.
